Bareboat Chartering at Sail Buzzards Bay

Sail Buzzards Bay has a thorough charter approval process. Our goals are to ensure that everyone who charters our boats has a safe and satisfying experience on the water, while feeling comfortable that our boats are being properly handled and cared for. Safely skippering a boat requires both skill and knowledge. This skill and knowledge can be gained through classes–such as those offered by Sail Buzzards Bay–or through your own experience.

Overview of Our Approval Process

Sail Buzzards Bay offers an approval process designed to recognize the knowledge and experience of boaters who received their training elsewhere or who learned on their own. These are the steps in that process:

1. Charter Application Submission
2. Phone Interview
3. On-the-Water Checkout

The steps begin with you submitting your application, telling us about your sailing experience. Click here to download an application. After we get your application, we will call you to conduct a short (15 minute) phone interview. During the interview you will be asked questions designed to quickly establish your level of knowledge, training and experience. At the end of the interview we will recommend the best path for you to gain charter approval.

Checkouts

If we determine that the experience represented on your resume and the knowledge demonstrated in the interview are consistent with chartering boats of the requested size, we will then schedule a checkout for you.
Checkouts consist of on-the-water skill and knowledge testing at a level that is consistent with the size and complexity of the boats to be chartered. Checkouts are performed by licensed skippers and generally require advanced scheduling. In general, a candidate should meet the same standards as a person with ASA certification at the equivalent level. Checkouts normally take three to four hours. Sail Buzzards Bay offers checkouts at the following approval levels:

Checkout policies

1. All first time renters must be checked out before or at the start of the rental period.
2. On-the-water checkouts are mandatory for all persons wishing to receive or upgrade their charter approval without going through our normal training process.
3. All renter must pass the checkout to gain charter approval.
4. Checkout must be scheduled in advance.
5. The checkout fee is $150. Checkout fee for Sail Buzzards Bay students is waived.
6. Checkout fees are non-refundable.

Reservation policies

1. 20% nonrefundable deposit MAY BE required before any boat will be reserved for you. This deposit will be credited to the rental fee at the time of registration.
2. Payment in full is required before start of reserved rental period.
3. A damage deposit is required prior to departure. All damage deposit must be made on a pre-authorized card or cash deposit at time of rental. This deposit will be refunded 100% when the boat is returned undamaged excepting normal wear and tear.
4. Rental Fee is due prior to boarding. Visa, MasterCard, cash, check (must clear prior to departure) or money order accepted. No checks accepted at time of boarding. Any and all collection fees, except normal processing fees, shall be the responsibility of the renter and will be billed to your credit card.
5. A 6.25% Commonwealth of Massachusetts Use Tax will be collected for each rental.

Cancellation policies

1. Cancellations outside of 7 days are eligible for full refund.
2. Cancellations between 2 and 7 days are eligible for 80% refund.
3. Cancellation less than 2 days out receive NO REFUND.
4. No refunds for loss of use due to damage to boat or motor caused by renter.

Operating Policies

1. Sail Buzzards Bay, LLC may refuse, at its sole discretion, to rent to persons it feels are not qualified to operate the boat safely.
2. Renter must be a responsible adult at least 21 or over with a valid driver's license.
3. The person providing the deposit must be the one to sign the Boat Rental Agreement.
4. The boat will be assigned to the renter and a rental agreement must be completed before departing the launch site.
5. Any person not signatory to the Rental Agreement may not operate the boat.
6. Renter is responsible for learning and obeying all local, state and federal laws pertaining to operating the rented boat.
7. Sail Buzzards Bay, LLC may terminate, without refund, the rental of the boat, if in its sole judgment, the boat is operated unsafely or the renter violates any of the terms of the rental agreement or rental policies.
8. Sail Buzzards Bay, LLC and renter must complete boat inspection checklist at check-in and check-out.
9. The rented boat shall not be used for any unlawful purpose or operated under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
10. Boat occupancy must not exceed boat capacity.
11. No night time sailing - boat must be secured between sunset and sunrise.
12. Rentals rates do not include gasoline, tax or insurance.
13. Absolutely no pets allowed without permission.

Miscellaneous fees and charges

1. If a boat is returned later than the agreed return time a fee of $50 for each half hour will apply. If the boat is returned 1 hour or more late, each additional hour will incur a late fee of $100.
2. Any towing or rescue caused by the renter's negligence will be performed at $150/hr.
3. Renter is responsible for any and all damage to boat, motor or equipment.
4. Sail Buzzards Bay, LLC offers NO insurance for damage to the machines. You may be covered under your homeowners’ insurance policy. Please check with your insurance agent about adding a rental damage rider to your homeowners’ policy if you are not already covered.
